Paul No 1 for ‘JCB song’ thanks to web fans

Little known duo, Luke Concannon and John Parker, otherwise known as Nizlopi, is another act propelled to the top of the charts by a combination of word of mouth, live concerts and especially the internet.

Nizlopi’s quirky recording of the ‘JCB Song’ is about a young boy’s admiration for his dad who helped him when he was bullied at school has taken on releasess backed by major recording companies.

As they didn’t have a recording contract, Luke and John formed their own label FDM records run with the help of Luke’s father from the Concannon family home. Unable to get radio play or advertising, Nizlopi has relied on CD sales at concerts and internet downloads.

In a similar way (but not with similar music!) to recent chart toppers, the Arctic Monkeys, Nizlopi has found the growing download market the key to success. Downloads now make up some 70% of the singles market with some 24 million tracks having been downloaded this year so far, compared with 4.7 million in 2004.

The JCB Song comes from the experiences of Luke when his father used to take him out on his digger. Luke suffers from dyslexia and these trips out gave him some relief from the taunts of school bullies. Not that this handicap affected Luke as he went on to get three ‘A’ levels and a degree in English!

Luke and John met on the school bus in Leamington when they were 13 years old and they played a variety of music, including jazz, funk, Irish soul, ska, blue grass, hip hop, in a variety of bands while at and after school. Now both 27 years old they have returned home to the Midlands and committed to Nizlopi.

Nizlopi is planning a tour across England, Ireland and Northern France to promote their album ‘Half these songs are about you….’ that includes the ‘JCB song.
