First Underage music festival held in London

The crowd at the festival

The Underage Festival, Britain's first ever outdoor music festival for 13- to 17-year-olds has been held in Victoria Park in east London.

The event was the brainchild of 15-year-old promoter, Sam Kilcoyne. Sam set up the hugely successful Underage Club night at The Coronet Theatre in Elephant and Castle, South London, after he was refused admission to a gig because of his age. Younger teenagers are able to enjoy the excitement of seeing live music, but in an environment that is safe and legal with no alcohol on sale.

. One year on, Sam Kilcoyne has expanded his ambitions with the Underage Festival. At the 8 hour long festival bands that played to the 5,000 audience from three stages included Crystal Castles, Cajun Dance Party, Foals, Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, Johnny Flynn, Metros, Mystery Jets, Patrick Wolf, I was a Cub Scout, Pull Tiger Tail, The Rumble Strips, The Teenagers, The Young Knives, To My Boy, Vincent Vincent and the Villians, and Xerox Teens.

The big act at the festival was The Pigeon Detectives from Rothwell, near Leeds. They have had a great year, playing at Glastonbury and having their album ‘Wait for Me’ reaching number three in the charts. The crowd sang along to every song and went wild to ‘I'm Not Sorry’ and their new single ‘Take Her Back’.

Sam Kilcoyne is quicker at putting on line-ups that young fans want to see than the movers and shakers of the traditional music industry. He is tapping into the old age desire to come together and listen to music.

However his 13- to-17-year-old audiences could be the first group finally to see that it is music that has power to make you enjoy yourself rather than the drugs and alcohol that have come with it.
